Pitch Perfect: Effectively Communicating Scientific Content

by Elaine Cercado

PSHS article

It was both an honor and a joy to serve as a resource speaker for the continuous professional development program of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) system—an institution renowned for producing some of the country’s brightest young minds in science and technology.

On July 9, 2025, I had the privilege of working with around 70 faculty and administrative personnel of PSHS through a hybrid learning session, focused on a critical yet often overlooked skill: how to effectively communicate scientific content and innovations to various audiences.

The Philippine Science High School system, managed under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), is widely regarded as the top science high school in the Philippines and one of the most prestigious in the ASEAN region. Given their exceptional academic standards and research orientation, the ability to communicate complex content clearly and persuasively is vital—not just for education, but for advancing public understanding and driving innovation.

Empowering Communicators Through the “Pitch Perfect” Program

To support this goal within a 90-minute session, I drew from three core modules of our “Pitch Perfect” program—a POWERinU initiative designed to enhance influence and communication skills across all sectors. During the session, we explored:

🎬 Defining and crafting a compelling value proposition
🎬 Delivering presentations that persuade and inspire
🎬 Incorporating powerful storytelling techniques to bring content to life

Whether communicating science, humanities, or any other discipline, I emphasized two key principles that unlock impactful communication:

  1. Craft a tailored value proposition that speaks directly to the needs and aspirations of your target audience—focusing on what creates gain and reduces their pain points.
  2. Deliver your message through compelling storytelling—using a natural flow, relatable structure, and storytelling techniques that emotionally and logically connect with listeners.

Learning Through Engagement

With the help of an energetic in-person host and moderator, the session came alive through interactive exercises. Participants didn’t just listen—they engaged, reflected, and even volunteered to share in plenary. It was a joy to witness such creativity, confidence, and openness in applying the concepts we discussed in real time.

As a facilitator, this experience reaffirmed the power of equipping educators and leaders with the tools of persuasive communication. These are the people shaping the next generation of scientists, thinkers, and changemakers. Helping them communicate with clarity, purpose, and influence is a step toward multiplying impact.

Because Speech Is Power

To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.”

In every classroom, presentation, or public forum, there is an opportunity to inform—but more importantly, to inspire. I am deeply grateful for the chance to contribute to this learning experience with PSHS and look forward to continuing this work across other institutions and organizations.
