Preparing the Next Generation of Team Leaders

By Trina Gonzales

“The program was designed for team leaders, but even I, an individual contributor HR practitioner took away a lot of valuable lessons. I liked that the workshop was designed to cater to different learning styles, and the facilitator made sure to engage everyone throughout the workshop.” ~ Ma. Rosario “Meyen” J. Lim, HR Advisor of INFOR

Last year, HR Avatar High-Potential Solution conducted a Team Leader Benchmarking Study for IBPAP.  The result of this survey was used by POWERinU Training and Coaching Philippines, Inc. to develop a Team Leader Development Program to address the gaps or “development areas” identified in the survey.

The first run of the Developing Millennials:  Your Next Generation Leaders, A Team Leader’s Development Program, is a result of the partnership of IBPAP (IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines), POWERinU Training and Coaching Philippines, Inc. and Quisumbing Torres and it was held last March 15 and 29, 2017 at the Quisumbing Torres JGC Conference Room in BGC, Taguig City.

The program was well-attended by leaders from the Operations and Learning and Development departments of various industries. During the first day, the sessions enabled the participants to have a refresher on the fundamentals of frontline management and performance management.  Meanwhile, the second day provided insights on the profile of millennials and how their work values differ from the values of other generations. Participants were also taught tools on root cause analysis, decision making, communication and prioritization.

The engaging way the trainer, Ms. Marion Briones, dealt with the participants coupled with the vibrant mix of people and their willingness to participate, led to a rich sharing of insights and learnings.  In fact, one of the participants said during the training evaluation, “It was one of the most fun and interactive training that I’ve attended. The training set up was really conducive to sharing and discussions with your fellow participants. I learned a lot from the trainer but I also discovered a lot from the participants. I know that this training had an impact on me when I started noticing myself sharing insights to others or quoting statements from the training.”  ~ Katrina Yan, Operations Manager of IHG®  – PHPRO Baguio Reservations Office

Also present during the second day of the training was Ms. Abigail Madarang, IBPAP HR and Admin Manager, who spoke a bit about how the training program was developed and to give the certificates to the pioneer batch of the Team Leader’s Development Program.
