Raising Self-Awareness: A Coach’s Perspective

by Benjie Garcia

Raising self awareness

As an executive and leadership coach, I’ve seen firsthand how self-awareness helps clients overcome barriers to becoming their best selves. Here are three impactful stories of leaders representing a composite of managers I have coached:

Peter’s Transition

Peter, newly promoted to a managerial role, struggled to lead his specialized team effectively. As a former individual contributor, he excelled at his job but found it challenging to motivate his team, especially when they began working remotely during the pandemic. He admitted he had trouble recognizing their efforts because he expected them to work like he did. Through our discussions, Peter realized that motivation stems from allowing his team to approach tasks in their own way. Understanding what to let go of and what to embrace is crucial in leadership.

Jane’s Fear

Jane faced challenges when assigned a new boss. She wanted to build a strong relationship but feared being misunderstood or judged by her peers. In our sessions, Jane discovered her fears were unfounded. Her initial interactions with her boss were positive, and she maintained good relations with her peers. Taking the initiative in their one-on-one meeting, she found her boss appreciated her efforts. Jane’s story highlights how self-awareness can dispel unfounded fears and help us move forward. As Raymond Joseph Teller said, “Nothing fools you better than the lie you tell yourself.”

John’s Awakening

John, a high-performing manager, excelled at developing strong talent but struggled with underperformers. He realized that while pushing for results, he often failed to truly listen to his team members. His desire to help was overshadowed by his drive for results. Our coaching sessions helped John understand the importance of empathy and listening. Research shows that empathy often decreases as leaders rise up the corporate ladder. John’s experience underscores the need to see team members as individuals, not just means to an end.

Conclusion

The stories of Peter, Jane, and John illustrate common challenges in leadership. Enhancing self-awareness is a key step toward becoming a better leader. Commit to it now, and watch yourself and your team thrive.
