On October 21-22, 2024, I, along with my colleague Penny Bongato from POWERinU, had the amazing opportunity to help equip Maya’s volunteer coaches with some basic but impactful coaching skills. This is our second year guiding Maya’s new batch of volunteer coaches as they help new cadets transition from student life into the working world.
But what really caught our attention this time was the reason why these coaches volunteered, despite their already busy schedules. So, we kicked off the workshop with a simple question: “Why did you choose to step up as a volunteer coach?” Not surprisingly, most said they were inspired by the support they received from their own coaches a year or two ago. That help made such a lasting impression that they wanted to pay it forward. It’s incredible to see how Maya is creating a beautiful cycle of giving back and nurturing a coaching culture within the organization. Equally inspiring was the enthusiasm of every participant to learn and practice basic coaching skills that they can apply even beyond their role as volunteer coaches.
